9 soldiers arrested over dead colleague
Mayuge police are investigating circumstances surrounding the death of Lieutenant Corporal, Joel Cherukot a Uganda People’s Defense Forces-UPDF soldier.
Cherukot was killed on Sunday and dumped at rail station in Magamaga town council in Jinja district. His deceased had wounds on the head while his right hand was chopped off.
He was pursuing a six month’s engineering course at the UPDF School of engineering and Logistics.
James Mubi, the Busoga East Police Spokesperson, said the deceased was last seen at Forest bar in Magamaga town council on Sunday evening.
“We have teamed up with investigators from UPDF that interacted with locals who confessed that the deceased was yesterday evening seen in the company of two colleagues whose names have been withheld,” Mubi said.
Mubi says preliminary investigations indicate that the deceased was killed in the barracks and his body dumped at the railway station
“Our preliminary findings indicate that, his killers dumped him at the railway station to be crushed by the train as a means of frustrating security investigations,” he said.
Captain George Musinguzi, the Jinja Zone UPDF spokesperson, says nine UPDF soldiers attached to Magamaga cantonment have been arrested to further investigations.
He says the suspects are being held at Magamaga barracks pending instructions from the UPDF headquarters.
The deceased’s body has been dispatched to Mulago National Referral Hospital mortuary for postmortem.
