Dramatic scenes as Stella Nyanzi is jailed
From the dock inside Luzira prison, former Makerere University researcher Dr Stella Nyanzi used a video teleconferencing facility to stage a nude protest against the Buganda Road Court magistrate that sentenced her to an 18 months jail term.
Gladys Kasamanyu, the magistrate read the sentence via a video link a day after she found the researcher found guilty of cyber harassing President Yoweri Museveni.
In a show of defiance, Nyanzi lifted her dress exposing her breasts to the magistrate as she accused her of being a coward and a vile of words punctuated with obscene gestures.
Prison wardresses struggled to get her out of the dock as she stripped but for some time, she resisted until they were reinforced that she was finally whisked away.
Nyanzi will spend nine months in Luzira since she had already spent nine months on remand.
In the courtroom, the magistrate physically tested the wrath of Nyanzi’s supporters as an unidentified man hurled a plastic bottle at her.
