NRM’s Hashim Sulaiman loses Nebbi Municipality seat
The police have fired teargas to disperse jubilant supporters of Robert Onega, a former parliamentary candidate for the Nebbi Municipality seat who successfully challenged the election of NRM’s Hashim Sulaiman.
Justice Anthony Ojuko Ojok of the High Court in Nebbi this morning nullified Hashim’s election on grounds that he lacked the prerequisite academic qualifications for an MP.
The judge concurred with the petitioner that Hashim was illegally nominated for election as MP of the newly created Municipality.
Hashim garnered 4,283 votes in the July 27, 2018 elections defeating FDC’s Onega who polled 4,159 in the tightly contested election.
The judge has thus ordered the Electoral Commission to organise fresh elections to fill the seat.
