UPDF given additional Shs 200bn for salaries

Parliament has approved Shs 200 billion for the enhancement of salaries for Uganda Peoples Defense Force (UPDF) officers.

This was after the house on Wednesday evening approved the budget estimates for the Ministry of Defense and Internal Affairs.

According to the committee chairperson Doreen Amule, the committee observed that in the phased salary enhancement scheme, partial salary enhancement for lower ranks was done in financial year 2018/2019.

Amule said the Ministry was now seeking an additional wage budget to cater for enhancement of salaries UPDF officers and for scientists in the financial year 2019/2020.

“Enhancement of salaries for UPDF Scientists requires Shs 33.2 billion and enhancement of salaries for UPDF from the ranks of Captains to Generals requires 196bn” the committee report reads.

In February last year, President Museveni promoted more than 2000 officers and men to various ranks.

Those promoted from the rank of Lt Gen to General this year include Ivan Koreta and Joram Mugume.  While those promoted from Major General to Lt. General are Pecos Kutesa, John Mugume, Proscovioa Nalweyiso, Charles Awany Otema, James Nakibus Lakara, Peter Elwelu and Muhoozi Kainerugaba among others.
