Uganda cubs go down fighting in Afcon U-17 campaign opener

The Uganda Cubs kick started the U-17 Total Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) on a losing note falling 1-0 to Angola in a Group A match played at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam on Sunday.

Angola capitalized on a corner kick after 33 minutes to score through Osvaldo Pedro Capemba. The corner resulted from some panicky defending by the Uganda Cubs.

The Angola team continued to maximize use of the gaps as the Cubs failed to take their chances.

In the second half the Cubs returned strongly as they created many chances but failed to score. Substitute Ibra Mugulusi had his shot saved by the Angola goalkeeper Geovani Raimundo Carvalho.

Uganda Cubs had Ibrahim Juma sent off for a second bookable offense. The earlier game had five-time U-17 World Champions Nigeria humble hosts Tanzania 5-4.

Uganda Cubs coach Paa Samuel Kwesi Fabin said his boys were not settled when the match started but improved later. “We shall fight to win the next game,” said Kwesi Fabin. Uganda Cubs will next face the Serengeti Boys of Tanzania on Wednesday.

On Monday Guinea will face Cameroon in the first Group B match before favourites Morocco battle Senegal in the second game.

The best two teams from each group will automatically qualify for the U-17 FIFA World Cup to take place in Brazil.
