Besigye tear gassed in Bushenyi

FDC strongman Dr Kizza Besigye’s political mobilization trip to the western Uganda district of Bushenyi ended in running battles as the police used tear gas to break up the former presidential candidate’s procession.

Besigye in company of FDC President, Patrick Oboi Amuriat among other party officials first evaded the police blockade outside Mbarara town on the road to Bushenyi where they addressed mobilisers from the districts of Rubirizi, Mitooma, Sheema and Bushenyi at Swing Inn Motel, Ishaka.

From the meeting, Besigye held a procession that was to take him to Kizinda playground to address a public rally.

From Bushenyi, the opposition politicians headed further south to Kabale where they are planning to hold similar activities tomorrow with a town hall meeting at Hamurwa Town Council and a rally at Bubare playground in Rubanda district.

However, the police have warned them against going ahead with their planned activities without a police clearance.

The Kigezi region police spokesman Elly Maate told journalists that the FDC leaders must operate within the dictates of the Public Order Management Act, short of which, the police will not allow the planned activities.
