Abed Bwanika defects from his own party, eyes Bukoto South

Three times presidential candidate and President of the People’s Development Party (PDP) Dr Abed Bwanika is in the advanced stages of dumping his own political party to join the Democratic Party (DP) as he readies himself for the 2021 Parliamentary contest in Bukoto South.

The outspoken veterinarian cum politician is reported to have been involved in talks with the DP leadership in Masaka to get the much-desired endorsement.

Knowledgeable sources have told this website that Masaka Woman MP also DP treasurer Mary Babirye Kabanda has been central to the talks between Bwanika and DP, and it is reported that Bwanika has accepted to stand as the DP candidate in the constituency formerly represented by former DP Secretary General, the late Mathias Nsubuga Birekeraawo.

In turn, DP will not subject him to party primaries and has subsequently asked its two members, Hakim Kizza and Gonzaga Mitimbo Kagumba who had started mobilizing in the constituency to look elsewhere.

Mitimbo has since shifted to the neighbouring Bukoto Mid-West currently represented by NRM Caucus secretary Joseph Muyomba Kasozi.

Interviewed, Kabanda said it is still premature for her to comment but admitted to being involved in talks with the former presidential candidate.

“Be patient, we shall soon hold a big event that will answer whatever you are asking about,” Kabanda said.

The DP leadership is convinced that Bwanika has what it takes to uproot the incumbent MP, NRM’s Hajji Muyanja Mbabaali given his oratory skill and the political mileage he gets from his appearance on Buganda Kingdom’s CBS FM radio weekly talk show Palamenti Yammwe which airs every Saturday.

Besides instrumental in organizing the UYD-DP re-union meetings, Bwanika has increased his presence in the constituency. He has constructed a palatial home at his ancestral village, Kimwanyi in Kingo Sub County where he recently hosted the traditional giveaway ceremony for his daughter.

Bukoto South is a DP stronghold and a strong DP candidate can easily defeat NRM’s wealthy Muyanja Mbabaali.
