Boat accident: More bodies retrieved, death toll now at 30
Overloading, poor mechanical condition and violent waves on Lake Victoria could have led to the tragic boat accident on Lake Victoria, the Police have said.
Deputy police spokesman Patrick Onyango has put the number of dead so far at 30.
“Update on Lake Victoria incident: 30 confirmed dead and 27 rescued. Marine team are doing whatever they can to find more bodies,” Onyango said on Twitter.
According to survivors, the was loaded beyond its capacity, and when it first showed signs of failure, some of the sailors asked its captain to dock at the nearest landing site but to no avail.
First Deputy Prime Minister Gen Moses Ali told journalists at the City Mortuary at Mulago that government had instituted an inter-ministerial team to follow the developments of the boat accident that has so far claimed lives of 15 females and 15 males.
“Government has decided that those bodies that have been cleared by the police and identified by the relatives be released,” Moses Ali said.
He said that government had instituted an investigation into the cause of the accident and a report will be “released as soon as possible.”
