Scores die in Rakai school inferno
At least 9 students are confirmed dead and 24 others are hospitalised in various hospitals in Rakai, Kyotera and Masaka districts following a fire that gutted a dormitory at St Bernard’s SS Mannya in Rakai district.
The fire which broke out shortly after midnight is suspected to have been started by a group of four students who were recently expelled from the school’s boarding section.
According to sources at the school, the unnamed boys took advantage of the school’s laxed security and moved in petrol in a small jerrycan.
They reportedly locked the S3 boys’ dormitory, poured the petrol and set it on fire.
According to Mathias Kasamba, who represented the area in Parliament before going to the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA), of the 24 students who are hospitalised, four are in critical condition.
Most of the casualties are Senior Three students.
