School fire: St Bernard’s SS Mannya closed
Security agencies are still taking stock of last night’s fire at St Bernard’s SS Mannya in Rakai district that left at least 9 S.3 students burnt beyond recognition.
The Police have retrieved the charred bodies of the dead students for transportation to the National analytical laboratory at Wandegeya, Kampala, for DNA tests in order to identify who is who.
Some 24 students are hospitalised in various hospitals in Kyotera and Masaka districts.
The school administration has meanwhile decided to send back home students in the non-candidate classes.
The fire which broke out shortly after midnight is suspected to have been started by a group of four students who were recently expelled from the school’s boarding section.
The arsonists reportedly locked the S.3 dormitory with padlocks before setting it on fire with petrol.
The students could not escape since the doors and windows have burglar proofing.
