MTN marathon goes up-country

The annual MTN Kampala marathon is not a Kampala affair now that the telecom giant is rolling it to up-country towns of Mbale, Gulu and Mbarara.

This is the 14th time that the telecom company is organising the marathon; the biggest of Uganda’s athletics calendar.

It will first be held on different dates in the up-country towns before coming to Kampala on November 25 with participants taking part in 42km, 21km, 10km and 5km races.

The Kampala marathon will start from Kololo independence grounds but this time, the routes will not take the runners to some of Kampala busy neighbourhoods like Ndeeba.

Timothy Masaba from Uganda athletic federation said that they wanted to secure especially elite athletes from errant road users who always take part in this marathon.

This year’s proceeds will go towards improving maternal health in the country.

Last year’s proceeds of about Shs 600m went to Kiswa and Komamboga health centres to help in improving maternal health.
