Bududa landslides: Death toll hits 40

At least 40 people have been confirmed dead following Thursday’s landslides that destroyed about five villages in Bukalasi Sub County, Bududa district.

More are still feared to be covered under the earth but with fading hope of finding any survivors since all rescue missions are using ordinary tools, and based on local initiatives.

The Red Cross through its local volunteers has been working with the community to retrieve the bodies taking them to Bukalasi police station.

Government has meanwhile announced a Shs 300,000 token to each family that lost their relatives to assist in burial arrangements, according to the Bududa district Chairman Wilson Wafula.

But the government contribution seemed not to have excited the locals who say they are tired of being buried alive by disasters and government comes in with condolence messages which cannot ressurect their dead.
