One killed as Police arrest suspected terrorists
One man was shot dead in a raid on a suspected terrorist cell at Namungoona in Kampala’s Lubaga division on Saturday.
According to police spokesman, the deceased, Abdul Kateregga, got injured during operation to arrest the suspected terrorists and was pronounced dead on arrival at Mulago hospital.
The operation was carried out by a joint security team led by police.
At least nine suspected terrorists were arrested in the swoop that was conducted on Saturday morning.
The suspects, Kayima said, are being held at different police stations in Kampala where they are to be screened to establish their identities and later on record statements.
“The operation was aimed at nailing a terrorist cell that has been threatening security with crimes of burglaries, armed robbery and murders or assassinations,” Kayima said.
He did not give further details but on Friday, Kayima issued a statement in which he claimed that the police had learnt of a plan to assassinate senior government officials, ministers, MPs and security personnel ahead of the Independence day celebrations.
