Bobi Wine cleared to travel, Zaake held
Kyadondo East MP Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine has at last left Kiruddu Hospital where the police have been detaining him.
His lawyer, Bugiri Municipality MP, Asuman Basalirwa confirmed to IntelPost that the musician cum politician had left the hospital headed for Entebbe Airport where is expected to catch a flight to the US for specialized treatment.
The pop star was arrested from the airport on Thursday evening as he arrived to catch his flight. He was brutally arrested and driven to Kiruddu alongside his Mityana Municipality counterpart francis Zaake Butebi.
While Zaake was arrested in relation to the ongoing investigations on his alleged escape from lawful custody and treason charges, no reasons were given for Bobi Wine’s arrest. It later emerged that he was wanted as a victim of torture to aid police investigations.
A police statement issued by the police on Friday evening shows that Bobi Wine’s arrest was in relation to a General enquiry File (GEF) the police opened on August 23 following a directive from the director of public prosecutions to investigate allegations of his torture.
“The investigation requires a medical examination of the alleged victim as close as possible in time to the alleged date of the commission of the offence by government medical experts. Before the medical examination was done, police learnt of his intended departure,” Kayima’s statement partly reads.
“As a result, Hon Kyagulanyi was halted from departure and was taken to Mulago National referral Hospital (Kiruddu Complex) in company of specialist doctors from the same hospital for purposes mentioned above. Now that Hon Kyagulanyi has been examined by the medical team of experts at Mulago National referral Hospital (Kiruddu Complex), the Uganda Police Force has allowed him to leave the medical facility,” Kayima further stated.
Meanwhile, the police are still holding on to the Mityana Municipality legislator who is required to record a statement which he hadn’t done by 8:30pm.
