Police: We have arrested MP Zaake
Mityana Municipality MP Francis Zaake Butebi might be frail, and in urgent need of specialised treatment – according to a medical report compiled by Lubaga hospital, but the Police have arrested him.
The MP who has been at Lubaga hospital for the past two weeks in critical condition was arrested from Entebbe airport where he had gone to catch a flight to India.
According to Masaka Woman MP Mary Babirye Kabanda, Zaake was headed for Manipal hospital in Bangalore, India for specialised treatment.
But he was intercepted at Entebbe airport’s VIP lounge with immigration officials demanding a letter of clearance from the Police’s criminal investigations directorate (CID).
In a statement, police spokesman Emilian Kayima said that Zaake was arrested as he attempted to flee the country.
“This morning, we found Hon Zaake at Entebbe International airport trying to flee the country, and, accordingly apprehended him. He will be taken to Mulago hospital for examination and/or further management while under police custody as earlier intended,” Kayima said in a statement.
Kayima said, at an opportune time, Zaake will be produced in court over charges charges of escape from lawful custody and treason.
The developments follow an earlier attempt by the police to get him from Lubaga hospital but failed after the hospital management declined to yield to police demands.
The director CID Grace Akullo on August 26 wrote to the Lubaga hospital a asked the hospital to surrender Mityana Zaake since he is among the 34 Arua suspects.
