Police asks Lubaga hospital to surrender MP Zaake.

In an August 26 letter to the Lubaga hospital administrator, the director of Police’s criminal investigations, Grace Akullo asked the hospital to surrender Mityana Municipality MP Francis Zaake Butebi to the police.

The MP was among the suspects that were arrested in Arua following the conclusion of campaigns in the Arua Municipality by-election.

He had travelled with fellow MPs to bolster the campaigns for Kassiano Wadri.

According to Akullo’s letter, upon arrest, Zaake taken to Arua police station from where he collapsed before being taken to Arua Regional Referral Hospital for treatment.

At Arua hospital, he was moved into a room in the hospital’s private ward from which he escaped.

“A case of escape from lawful custody has been opened against Hon Francis Zaake. On August 17, the police received information that he was actually admitted at Lubaga hospital in critical condition and that he was dumped at the gate of the hospital by unknown people,” Akullo stated.

She said the MP is being investigated for treason, the same charge that Kyadondo East MP Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine and 33 others are facing before the court in Gulu.

“We therefore request that Hon Francis Zaake Butebi be transferred to Mulago National Referral Hospital by specialists who will furnish us with a report of his health status to enable us proceed with investigations,” Akullo wrote.

Last week, Zaake’s family told journalists that some suspected security operatives had attempted to get him from his hospital bed at Lubaga but the police were quick to refute the report.

Lubaga hospital is still adamant to give away the MP and have sought legal guidance from its lawyers.
