MPs Wadri, Karuhanga, Mwiru charged with treason in Gulu

Arua Municipality MP-elect Kassiano Wadri as well as MPs Paul Mwiru (Jinja Municipality East), Gerald Karuhanga (Ntungamo Municipality) and former MPs Michael Mabikke have been charged with treason before the Chief Magistrate’s court in Gulu.

According to the charge sheet, the accused tried to harm the president when they hurled stones at his convoy and thereby smashing the windscreen of one of the cars in the convoy.

The legislators with a group of more than 30 others were produced in court at about 1:30pm.

Some of the suspects were limping as they made their way into the courtroom and spoke of severe torture at the hands SFC and the police.

One woman, Night Asala is said to be bleeding through her private parts.
The accused did not enter any plea since the charge of treason is only triable by the High Court.

But Busiro East MP Medard Lubega Sseggona who is part of the defence lawyers asked court to allow the suspects to be taken to a private medical facility for medical examination upon the recommendation of a police doctor.

The Chief Magistrate Francis Matenga Dawa granted Sseggona’s prayer when he directed the prisons authorities to ensure that the accused are taken to a health facility of their choice before they are produced in court again on August 30.
