Besigye: Museveni is to blame for Arua violence

Former presidential candidate Dr Kizza Besigye has blamed the Monday violence in Arua on President Yoweri Museveni.

Addressing a press conference at his Katonga Road office in Kampala, Besigye said that the presence of Museveni’s involvement in Parliamentary campaigns was the root cause of the violence that was witnessed after the close of campaigns in the Arua Municipality by-elections on Monday.

“Mr Museveni’s participation and the presence of his presidential security in a Parliamentary campaign is a problem itself because in a Parliamentary campaign, candidates cross each others paths,” Besigye said.

“If you want to go into campaigns for MPs and want the security of a president which involves closing off roads which other parties use, then you’re creating a problem and in itself an incitement for violence,” he added.

Museveni’s security, Besigye said, and the attendant heavy deployment of the army in a civil election should be condemned.

“Because soldiers are deployed in a civil activity that should have been managed by the civil police, that is why they respond with lethal power to unarmed civilians,” Besigye said.

“They now want to claim that someone had weapons but who was armed in Bugiri where someone killed or in Rukungiri or at Bulange here?” Besigye wondered, further arguing that the guns narrative is intended to justify the security’s use of live bullets on a crowd.

Besides Yasin Kawuma, Besigye said, there could be more other casualties of the Monday violence.

“I saw with my own eyes a person who I believe was dead laying on the street in the process of being loaded onto a police truck,” Besigye said.

He said there were a lot more other people in detention that have not been reported about notably Kawempe South MP Mubarak Munyagwa.

Besigye said that the country is in a state of terror which should worry everyone.
He also urged Ugandans to dismiss the case of being found with an illegal against Bobi Wine “with all contempt.”

“It is a cover up of the death… I have myself been charged with treason twice, I have been charged with rape, being in possession of illegal guns and terrorism,” Besigye said.
