FDC bigwigs face-off in Arua as election draws close

Various FDC leaders are camping in Arua Municipality to drum up support for rival candidates in the Arua Municipality parliamentary by-elections.

For presidential candidate Dr Kizza Besigye and FDC president Patrick Amuriat Oboi are expected to campaign for the FDC flag bearer Bruce Mudathir Musema.

Former party president Maj Gen Mugisha Muntu and a host of FDC MPs are, in an unprecedented show of defiance against the party leadership, are campaigning for an independent candidate, former Terego MP, Kassiano Wadri.

This group will be beefed up by Kyadondo East MP Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine, a new political sensation, who is moving with the entire team he used in his own Kyadondo East and last month in Bugiri Municipality to win the seat for JEEMA president Asuman Basalirwa.

Bobi Wine’s entry into the Arua Municipality politics has thrown the FDC camp into further confusion especially after the party’s deputy spokesman, Jinja Municipality East MP Paul Mwiru openly denounced the FDC candidate.

On Thursday, Mwiru addressed a joint press conference in Kampala with Bobi Wine’s team hardly a month after he addressed a press conference at the FDC headquarters at Najjanankumbi to announce Musema as the official party candidate.

“I am a live testimony of working together as political organizations, it’s crystal clear that when have chosen to walk it alone as individual parties, we have been disproved by the population. Even we don’t unite, the public unites in the ballot box. They did it in Bugiri and we thought that we owe them an apology and the best way is for all of us to be in Arua and back up Kassiano Wadri,” Mwiru said.

Amuriat has threatened disciplinary action against the errant party members.

The by-election that is scheduled for August 15 attracted a total of 11 candidates including NRM’s Nusurah Tiperu.

The seat fell vacant following the June 8 killing of Ibrahim Abiriga who was the area MP.
