Mbabazi rules out return to Museveni’s government
In a speech at his niece Bridget Birungi Rwakairu’s traditional marriage to South African first son Andile Ramaphosa, former Prime Minister Amama Mbabazi said, a return to government is not among the options he is considering.
Mbabazi was speaking to an audience that had President Yoweri Museveni who is reported to be persuading the former presidential candidate to return to the NRM fold and work with him.
Museveni’s efforts to get back Mbabazi started in 2017 after meeting Racheal Kiconco, a daughter to the former Prime Minister.
Efforts intensified early this year when Museveni sent emissaries to Mbabazi before engaging him on phone. Mbabazi reportedly told Museveni that he was not interested in a cabinet job save for returning as Chairman of the NRM.
On Saturday, Mbabazi told his guests that included Presidents Yoweri Museveni of Uganda and Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa that he is not planning to return to government.
He hailed Museveni for honouring his invitation.
Mbabazi’s niece Bridget Birungi Rwakairu was given away to Andile Ramaphosa at a colourful ceremony blended with cultures of both Uganda’s Bakiga and the Vhavenda people of South Africa.
