SA’s Ramaphosa jets in for son’s Kuhingira
At about 2:30 pm, a commercial South African Airways flight touched down at Entebbe International Airport. On board was Cyril Ramaphosa, the President of the Republic of South Africa, and father to Andile Ramaphosa.
The Ramaphosas are in the country for Kuhingira; the traditional marriage ceremony among the Bakiga and Banyankole people of Uganda.
Andile will take Bridget Birungi, a niece to former Prime Minister Amama Mbabazi at a function expected to be graced by President Yoweri Museveni.
According to Mbabazi’s spokesperson Maggie Lukowe, Museveni who fell out with Mbabazi in 2014 after the he (Mbabazi) declared ambitions to run for president, was required by dictates of international diplomacy to attend being that Mbabazi will be hosting a head of state.
“Besides that, Museveni is considered a parent here [Mbabazi’s home] and therefore his coming is also in that capacity. This is a purely social function without any political undertones,” Lukowe said.
The South African President was required to come in person since the Bakiga traditionally don’t give away their daughters to the groom but to the groom’s father.
