FDC shuffles Parliamentary leadership
In what appears to be a step towards asserting his authority over Uganda’s leading opposition party – the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), party president Patrick Amuriat Oboi has announced changes in the opposition leadership in Parliament.
The changes announced on Friday afternoon confirm a long held public rumour, that the party leadership has informally spread but publicly denied.
Kasese Woman MP Winfred Kiiza who is currently in the US has been dropped and replaced by Gulu Woman MP Betty Aol Acan as Leader of Opposition in Parliament.
Kiiza’s exit from the coveted opposition leadership office became eminent in December last year following Amuriat’s election as FDC president.
Kiiza supported former party president Maj Gen Mugisha Muntu against Amuriat who enjoyed the backing of party icon, Dr Kiiza Besigye.
Amuriat has also not spared all the other MPs who supported Muntu except Kira Municipality MP Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda who has been retained as Chief Opposition Whip.
Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga is however likely to reject the appointments on technical grounds since the FDC president has defiantly used Minority leader and Minority Chief Whip – titles that are not provided for in the Administration of Parliament Act.
