Violence in Bugiri as six Municipalities elect MPs, Mayors
Voting is underway in the six newly created municipalities of Bugiri, Apac, Kotido, Nebbi, Sheema and Ibanda for election of Members of Parliament and municipal councils.
While reports from the rest of the municipalities suggest a calm start to the voting, in Bugiri, violent scenes have been witnessed.
DP National Organising Secretary Sulaiman Kidandala has been rushed to Bugiri hospital after he being pelted with stones by suspected NRM functionaries.
Kidandala was part of parliamentary candidate Asuman Basalirwa’s team that was chasing after a group of NRM agents said to be bribing voters.
According to JEEMA spokesman Abdunoor Ssentongo Kyamundu, the NRM agents are moving in a green Toyota Land cruiser registration number UAU 070J with Police protection.
Another group are using a Toyota Noah UAV 174J.
JEEMA’s Basalirwa is in the race with NRM’s Francis Oketcho and FDC’s Eunice Namatende.
Meanwhile, in Sheema, by 8am, voting had not started in some areas due to late delivery of polling materials.
