JEEMA’s Basalirwa takes Bugiri

A margin 661 votes is what Justice Forum (JEEMA) president Asuman Basalirwa needed to defeat his closest challenger, NRM’s John Francis Oketcho.
It was a hotly contested race that from the onset appeared to be between Basalirwa and FDC’s Eunice Namatende.

Vigourously promoted on social media by FDC enthusiasts, the official results put Namatende in a distant third position with 928 votes.

Basalirwa garnered 3,928 against yellow man Oketcho’s 3,267 Namatende (FDC).
Joel Wamono who was an independent candidate polled 15 votes while Hajji Siragi Lyavaala stood down and backed Basalirwa got eight votes.

Christine Fiona Kinihira, the Bugiri returning officer declared Basalirwa winner at 45 minutes after midnight throwing his supporters into a frenzy.

Chants of “Twagala Asuman ssi ssente” filled the council hall Bugiri district headquarters as the former Makerere University stepped forward to receive his declaration of results (DR) forms.

Many more did not wait for the official EC declaration and took to the streets of Bugiri Municipality to celebrate Basalirwa’s victory.
