Minister wants Energy officials punished for failure to use $ 35m
The minister of Finance and Economic Development Matia Kasaija is irked by the failure by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral development to utilise $ 36million for electricity development projects.
This followed a letter written by the permanent secretary of the ministry of energy Robert Kasande requesting Kasiaja to initiate the cancellation of the loan.
“It is extremely disappointing that your sector failed to produce bankable project proposals when the sector is financing deficits. I would like to remind you that projects like electrification of industrial parks notably Kapeeka, Sukulu, and Mbale and many other transmission lines remain unfunded,” Kasaija wrote in a letter addressed to Irene Muloni the minister of Energy and Mineral development.
Kasaija said this was extremely discomforting for a ministry that has got very many unfunded projects to ask for the cancellation of a loan already processed.
“This is to express my displeasure for the failure to utilize the resources when you had all the opportunity to efficiently utilize the resources to finance unfunded priorities in the sector. I strongly recommend special disciplinary measures be undertaken against whoever was responsible,” the letter also copied to the president and the prime minister reads in part.
