Gulu hospital gets new Radiology equipment

The Minister for Health, Dr Jane Ruth Aceng has Tuesday commissioned a new Radiology department at Gulu regional referral hospital that was constructed with support from the Italian Cooperation.

Speaking at the event, Aceng said that the radiology department will ease diagnosis of various diseases which will reduce the cost of health care.

Aceng said the government is going to provide new equipment like the digital X-ray machine, ultrasound among others on top of training specialists to work in the department.

She also revealed that in the next financial year that is starting July 1, government has allocated money for CT scan machines in all referral hospitals across the country.

Domenico Fornara, the Italian ambassador to Uganda said that this is a long term project that has been in Northern Uganda for the last ten years adding that the total cost of the project is 2.5 million Euros including training and buildings.

Dr James Elima, Gulu regional referral hospital director, said that their X-ray machine broke down in 2015. Even at its best, they would only work on 184 patients but now with the new X-ray  machine that was installed mid last year, they have worked on 1,538 patients.

The construction and equipping of the Radiology department cost at least $250,000.
