Kayihura distances self from lawyer Alaka
Jailed former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Gen Kale Kayihura has turned down an offer by city lawyer Caleb Alaka to offer legal representation.
In a statement signed by his wife Angella Kayihura, the beleaguered General has not met nor instructed Alaka or Evans Ochieng to represent him.
Sections of the media reported on Monday that Kayihura had hired the two lawyers’ services but the statement by Angella stated that neither has Kayihura nor any member of his family met the said lawyers or their law firm.
“Gen Kayihura’s and our only lawyers are M/S Kampala Associated Advocates [KAA]. Gen Kayihura’s lawyers and his family have todate have unfettered access to him,” Angella said in the statement.
She also dismissed reports that Kayihura had instructed his lawyers to file a suit in court protesting his detention beyond the Constitutional 48-hour mark.
“To-date, neither Gen Kayihura nor any member of his family has instructed any lawyer to file any application in any court for any purpose,” Angella further stated.
Alaka was quoted in the media saying that he was to file an application in court for the embattled former chief policeman to be produced before court since he has been under detention beyond 48 hours without trial.
Kayihura was arrested on June 14 and has since been under detention at the Makindye based Military Police barracks as investigations into his alleged involvement criminality within the police force continue.
There had been reports that he would be arraigned before the General Court Martial but at the time this reporter visited the court premises on Monday afternoon, there were no signs of the court sitting.
