Police names Nambooze in Abiriga murder
Uganda police working in conjunction with sister security agencies have launched investigations into Mukono Municipality Member of Parliament Betty Nambooze over the assassination of former Arua Municipality MP Ibrahim Abiriga.
According to a statement issued on Tuesday evening by Police Spokesman Emilian Kayima, Police has two recordings of offensive nature being investigated in line with the computer Misuse Act
“The police is investigating these recordings including a post by Hon . Betty Nambooze Bakaleke MP Mukono Municipality” said in the statement.
Col. Ibrahim Abiriga together with his brother and bodyguard Said Kongo were gunned down by unknown assassins on Friday, June 8 as the fallen legislator closed up to his home in Kirinyabigo Kawanda in Wakiso districts.
Moments after the news of his death went viral on social media, a post said to have been posted by Nambooze that was construed to have celebrated Abiriga’s killing.
Although in the post Nambooze grieved the death of Abiriga, and also condemned any acts of violence that seemingly target individuals because of their political affiliation.
However some sections of her post attracted backlash with some in NRM accusing her of celebrating Abiriga’s death especially where she wrote that; “… I am however, not going to insult Abiriga’s memory by pretending that he was my friend. He was far from it….He wasn’t shy about expressing his opinion….which I highly doubt was his opinion, to me he was a loud speaker for the people who have chosen to love power more than the future of our Uganda. He knew how to offend and irritate those of us who find Museveni’s Government a curse to our country. He is one of the politicians who really bastardised the politics of this country. As other people were being murdered including fellow Moslems, Abiriga clapped loudest that there should be no change…he invested all himself to maintain the status quo and it’s within this status quo that he has perished.”
Nambooze’s file is one of the four general inquiry files that the police have opened up at the Criminal Investigations Directorate.
Police has further opened five cases of Malicious damage of property and one case of inciting violence and disturbance of the dead.
These are in connection with the chaotic scene that was witnessed Sunday night, June 10 in Arua upon the arrival of Abiriga’s body.
A lot of property was destroyed and several including journalists got injured.
Among the properties destroyed were a police ambulance van, police motorcycle that was burnt to ashes, A-Plus funeral services motor cycle, other motor cycles, tents, plaster and utensil.
