Museveni overrules MUBS council, directs Balunywa’s re-appointment
In what appears to be a final blow to attempts by the Makerere University Business School (MUBS) not to renew Prof Wasswa Balunywa’s contract as the institution’s director, President Yoweri Museveni has directed his wife Janat Kataha Museveni who also doubles as the Minister of Education and Sports to re-appoint Balunywa.
In a May 28 letter to Janet, Museveni indicated that he is not willing to be taken back by “disoriented pro-imperialist academia.”
His letter came hours after the MUBS council chaired by former Makerere University vice chancellor Prof Venasius Baryamureeba appointed Prof Moses Muhwezi as acting Principal.
” I am writing to direct you to re-appoint Proffesor Wasswa Balunywa as the Principal of Makerere University Business School for another term on the expiry of this one” Museveni’s letter to Janet partly reads.
The tone in Museveni’s letter showed that he was angered by the MUBS council’s decision given that a few days ago, he had written to Janet advising her to re-appoint Balunywa.
Balunywa and Baryamureeba have been at loggerheads for sometime, and, this could probably explain why Baryamureeba hastily convened a council meeting on Monday to appoint Balunywa’s replacement. The council decision was communicated in an email sent out at 1:34pm to all staff.
Museveni copied his letter to the vice president Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi, Prime Minister Dr Ruhakana Rugunda, the Attorney General William Byaruhanga and the Chairman of the Education service commission that Janet had already instructed to begin on the process of installing Muhwezi.
