Three injured in Makerere University fire

A female student sustained serious head injuries after she jumped from the second floor of Mary Stuart hall at Makerere University in a desperate attempt to escape a fire that gutted the residential hall.

The fire started shortly before 6am from one of the canteens at the hall.

Mary Stuart hall is one of the University’s halls of residence.

The police dispatched seven fire fighting trucks to contain the massive fire before it engulfed the entire building.

“Three female students were injured as they were escaping and they are not in bad state. The hall is safe now save for the ground floor that is littered with with debris and will need cleaning and some repairs,” Police spokesman Emilian Kayima said in statement issued on Saturday morning.

Kayima said, police investigation teams and scenes of crimes officers are still on ground to get to the cause of the fire.

“We commend the students and citizens who [immediately] called the police enabling us to quickly respond. We wish the injured the students quick recovery and parents need to calm down as there is no cause for alarm,” Kayima said.
