Minister blames health workers for inadequate oxygen cylinders

The Minister of Health in Charge of general duties, Sarah Opendi has said oxygen shortage at Mulago Hospital could be as a result of scrupulous health workers who hide cylinders.

Opendi made the remarks on Tuesday during parliament sitting. This followed concerns raised by the Adjumani Woman MP Jesca Ababiku over acute oxygen shortage. Ababiku said she had lost her brother in Mulago over oxygen shortage.

Ababiku said although the ward had thirty patients, ten of them were in need of oxygen cylinders and this saw six patients share the two cylinders.

She asked the house to block the budget of the Ministry until the issue of oxygen at the health facility is addresed.

“This is a national referral hospital and we don’t have these facilities. How much is budgeted for oxygen cylinders, I pity the doctors, they were helpless. If there is no adequate budget, I lobby my colleagues” she said.

Opendi on her side said there were adequate cylinders and said it could be the staff to blame. She said health workers could hide the oxygen to extort money from patients and this needs to be investigated.

“we have adequate supplies of oxygen in Mulago hospital, however there may be a problem with those who are in charge, hiding the cylinders. Allow me investigate this matter and come back with a detailed statement.” She said
