CECAFA: Zanzibar in Trouble for fielding Ineligible Players
The Zanzibar under 17 team faces disqualification at the ongoing Council of East And Central Africa Football Association (CECAFA) for presenting over age players.
Ten players in the team are over the age of 17, officials in the ongoing CECAFA U-17 tournament that’s meant to end over the weekend in Burundi have said.
Zanzibar’s game against Tanzania that was meant for yesterday was halted until further notice over the irregularities.
The fate of Zanzibar is yet to be decided in the championship.
Rogers Mulindwa the CECAFA region football governing body publicity secretary says authorities will have a meeting later today to decide on fate of Zanzibar.
The Uganda Cubs team that opened up the tournament on Sunday settling for a 1-all draw with Tanzania, has been has been scheduled to play Zanzibar Tuesday but this will further be confirmed by the decision from meeting.
The tournament had gone over eight years without being hosted.
In an effort to develop football in the region from grassroots level, it was decided by CECAFA region member countries to have such under age tournaments.
Mulindwa says use of over age player could make the tournament to lose meaning and thereby killing the objective of the game.
